PROTOTYPE HISTORY
Aristo-Craft Refrigerator or "Reefer" cars are based upon a forty-foot
Steel Freight Railcar of the 1930’s era.
However, the concept of a refrigerated railcar may have been around as early as the mid-1800’s. The prototype of the Swift Reefer (ART-46227) has been documented frequently transporting beef during the Civil War.
A variety of methods were used to keep the perishable cargo cool including
crushed ice, mechanical refrigeration, and heat-reflective surfaces on the
exterior of the car. STEEL REEFER CARS (ART-46200 SERIES) FEATURES:
- Front / Rear Operating AAR Knuckle Couplers
- Detailed freight car trucks / wheelsets with individual springs
- Operating body doors with moveable latch
- Operating roof-hatch doors with moveable latch
- Three-dimensional ladders on ends and sides
- BRASS grab-railings
- Full Underframe, including Air Brake System components
- Simulated WOOD-GRAIN flooring
- Realistic paint colors and railroad markings
